Metamorphism explores the advanced modification and adaptation of living organisms at a genetic and cellular level to achieve extraordinary physiological and functional transformations. This field merges principles from genetics, bioengineering, and synthetic biology to develop organisms with novel traits and capabilities.
Fields of study include:
- Altering the genetic code of organisms to induce new biological traits, using CRISPR-Cas9 and other genome-editing technologies
- Applying synthetic biology principles, in order to reprogram cells to perform functions beyond their natural capabilities
- Manipulating proteins and metabolites within organisms to drive functional changes - by modifying metabolic pathways and protein expression - to create organisms with tailored biochemical properties
- Integration of biological systems with synthetic materials and technologies to create hybrid organisms
