Metalinguistics

Metalinguistics is the study of the interplay between language and its use, focusing on the awareness and analysis of language as a system and social tool. It encompasses how individuals think about, reflect upon, and manipulate language beyond its basic communicative function. This field explores the relationship between linguistic structures, cultural contexts, cognitive processes, and communicative strategies, making it a cornerstone in understanding how humans navigate and shape their linguistic environments.

Unlike traditional linguistics, which primarily examines language's structural aspects (syntax, phonetics, semantics), metalinguistics delves into the mechanisms by which speakers understand and manipulate language itself. This includes topics such as code-switching, language play, linguistic relativity, and the meta-awareness involved in learning or teaching languages.
