Microbiomes
Microbiomes refer to the communities of microorganisms - bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, and other microbes - that inhabit specific environments, both within and on the surface of living organisms and in the natural world. These microbial ecosystems are complex and essential for the functioning of their respective hosts, whether they are human, animal, plant, or even soil or water environments. The study of microbiomes is crucial in understanding the fundamental biological processes that sustain life, as well as their impact on health, disease, and environmental systems.
Applications include:
- Human Health: understanding the microbiome's role in health and disease has spurred new research into probiotics, prebiotics, and faecal transplants as therapeutic approaches.
- Agriculture and food security: by manipulating plant and soil microbiomes, agricultural practices can be optimised to improve crop yield, enhance soil fertility and reduce dependency on chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
- Environmental Management: microbiomes are vital for ecosystem functioning, including carbon and nitrogen cycles. By understanding and managing microbiomes, scientists can explore methods for cleaning up environmental pollutants and restoring degraded ecosystems.
- Biotechnology: microbial communities have a vast potential in biotechnology, from industrial fermentation processes (e.g., beer, wine, and biofuels production) to the development of novel antibiotics and biopharmaceuticals.
